Kids Becoming More Susceptible To Eczema

Skin Condition Is Often Linked To Other Allergies Later In Life

(CBS) CHICAGO More children than ever are being treated for an uncomfortable skin condition that can cause serious stress including sleep disorders and problems in school.

As CBS 2 Medical Editor Mary Ann Childers reports, some doctors now think they know the reason why eczema is on the rise.

At 2 years old, little Brady has already had his share of skin problems.

“Brady got eczema when he was about 2 months old,” said Heidi Wentz, Brady’s mother. “It was pink, a rash. It looked a little bit oozy when it scabbed over.”

It covered his elbows, spread down his legs and worried his mother.

“He did touch it a lot,” she said. “He scratched it a lot. It was just heartbreaking. People were like ‘Oh my gosh, what’s wrong with him?’”

Doctors say irritants such as dust and pollen pass through Brady’s skin, and trigger an immune reaction.

“It’s very common,” pediatric dermatologist Julie Schaffer, M.D., said of the condition. “About 15 to 20 percent of school-age kids in North America have atopic dermatitis.”

That’s more than five times the incidence of eczema reported in the 1950s. Schaffer, the head of pediatric dermatology at NYU medical school, says there could be several reasons.

“One of them is called the hygiene hypothesis: kids today don’t get exposed to as much dirt and germs and childhood illness, and one thought is that their immune systems don’t mature in quite the same way, and might be more likely to be directed to allergic-type responses,” she said.

That could also be why children with eczema tend to develop asthma and hay fever.
