Basic Information About Atopic Dermatitis
Atopy is a term that was introduced years ago to describe a group of patients who have a personal or family history of one or more of the following conditions: hay fever (allergic rhinitis), asthma, dry skin, and eczema. Atopic dermatitis a type of eczema that is itchy, recurrent, chronic, and occurs on both sides of the body symmetrically. Atopic dermatitis causes the skin to become inflamed with redness, swelling, cracking, weeping, crusting, and scaling.

· Atopic dermatitis occurs in 5-25 per 1000 people
· Up to 15 % of population may suffer from atopic dermatitis during childhood
· Males and females are affected equally
· Atopic dermatitis accounts for 10%-20% of referrals to dermatologists
· 65% of people who have atopic dermatitis develop symptoms in the first year of life and 90% develop symptoms before age 5
· People who live in urban areas or low-humidity climates have a higher risk of atopic dermatitis
